The Vasche dell’Ex-Zuccherificio di Crevalcore—the environmental rebalancing area created around the former sugar refinery—extends over 22 hectares. It developed within the settling basins of the old factory in Crevalcore, which ceased operations in 1985. Water levels in the ponds range from just a few centimeters to nearly two meters in depth. Over time, a marshland habitat has formed around them, creating ideal conditions for numerous bird species. Alongside the open water, the site features muddy sandbanks, wetlands, and reed beds, while shrubs—mainly willows and black elder—have grown along the perimeter embankments.
Birdlife is one of the reserve’s main highlights, with different species visible throughout the year. Some are rare visitors that stop to rest and feed during migration, while others remain for longer periods and even nest here, including a pair of storks. The area is also an important refuge for various amphibians and reptiles, such as European green toads, tree frogs, and European pond turtles.
A clearly marked trail, with signs and directional arrows, winds through the reserve, allowing visitors to explore it independently with the help of an audio guide. Three birdwatching hides and several informational panels positioned along the pond edges enhance the experience. From one of the two observation points, visitors can overlook one of the reforested zones. To protect the wildlife, it is essential to respect the rules displayed on dedicated signs and remain strictly on the designated paths.
Environmental education activities for schools and visitor groups are organized within the park by Sustenia Srl (info@sustenia.it).
